The main aim is to be safe under all conditions which means that a disproportionate amount of time and money goes into planning for infrequent, rare, or completely unexpected situations. Unexpected they may be, but thorough planning needs to cover them, just in case.
Such is life for the safety conscious skipper who wishes to comply with statutary and other requirements in order to maintain a safe vessel.
Much has been learned from the racing fraternity and their experiences, and much of it is common sense given the sailor's broad range of possible scenarios.
Accidents happen but the statistics and analysis are interesting and give many pointers to safe behaviour. Most people think of all sorts of nautical disaster causes, but in reality most accidents are caused by human error, and not keeping a proper watch, and the underlying cause is often drinking too much.
The main game is enjoying the sailing, enjoying good company, and enjoying the destinations.
